2008 Legends Thirty Five Cards For Two Dollars Junk Repack

Wow, I guess no one wanted the 1000th post. You all hated my Elvis post too. How can you hate Elvis? It's not natural. I shall have my revenge, however. You had your chance, now you're stuck with a Legends crap pack. I got this at Books A Million for two bucks while shopping for presents. There were actually 39 cards in the 35 card pack, so I've put 36 of them in old 9-pocket sheets to scan and saved three special cards to show off individually. Here's what I got.

2005 Fleer Tradition Nomah - this is the grey parallel version for what it's worth.
2005 Fan Favorites Rafael Santana - Fan Favorite? Really? The card is creased in the middle too.
2004 Skybox LE Kevin Brown die cut - I can't remember if the die cuts were a parallel or a hobby version or what.
2004 Upper Deck Casey Daigle Star Rookie - The former 1st round pick of the D-Backs has been stuck in Triple-A for the past three years.
1987 Topps Cecil Fielder - This would have been a good card about 18 years ago.
1991 Donruss Rob Dibble - Nasty!
1987 Chuck Cary - Chuck's factoid on the back is all about Brooks Robinson.
1990 Donruss Ozzie Guillen - If Bobby ever stops managing the Braves, I want Ozzie for manager. Hopefully he'll say something horrifically stupid and get kicked out of Chicago the day Bobby announces his retirement.
1987 Topps Ed Vande Berg - There's a lot of '87 cards in this pack. Ed's split last name on this card looks weird to me.

1986 Donruss The Rookies Pete Incaviglia - Inky Rookie!!! No way! I just checked my 1989 price guide and this card booked for $2.00 which is how much I paid for the pack. Too bad it's not 1989.

1986 Donruss Cesar Cedeno - I never got a single pack of '86 Donruss in 1986 and they always look special to me now.
1992 Pinnacle Ruben Sierra - somewhere in my basement there is a binder with about 5 pages worth of Sierra cards in it.
1992 Upper Deck Milt Cuyler - I wonder if he's related to Kiki? Maybe Early?
1994 Collector's Choice Scott Livingstone - I hated this set when it first came out and now I can't remember why.
1992 Leaf Dick Schofield - My roomate in college collected Dick Schofield cards. I have no idea why.
2004 Showcase Esteban Loaiza - I always got him mixed up with Javier Vazquez, which is really annoying now. Esteban was dominating in Front Page Sports '98 for some reason.
1991 Score Joe Grahe - Score was always known for their colored borders so when one of the colors was white in 1991, I thought it was a big rip-off.
1990 Donruss Oil Can Boyd - Every serious collection needs at least one Oil Can.
1991 Donruss Ramon Martinez - Remember when Pedro was his brother instead of the other way around? This card looks like it's been in the bottom of someone's shoe.

1994 Andy Tomberlin - Look at this picture. Andy only had 5 major league cards (at least that's all I can find) and this is one of them. '94 Donruss, Pinnacle and Stadium Club, '96 Mother's Cookies and '97 Pacific Gems of the Diamond. That's it. And Topps chose this photo. Poor Andy.

1993 Fleer Carlos Baerga - This card's beat up too... there must have been some wild times at the repack factory that day.
2001 Fleet Tradition Aubrey Huff - Old school rainbow Rays cap. Gotta love that.
1997 Pinnacle Inside Scott Rolen - Scott's REAL rookie is 1995 Bowman. It has no autograph on it and it's not a funkyfractor numbered to 5 so no one cares.
2001 Fleer Tradition Corey Patterson - How in the hell is he not the next Griffey?? Dammit Cubs, quit screwing up outfield prospects!!!
1991 Topps Keith Miller - One of these days I'm going to buy a box of '91 Topps just to try to pull a vintage buyback card.
2003 Bazooka Barry Zito Comic - FACT: Barry has the best Win Percentage (.734) among pitchers with 50 or more decisions since 1900. ANOTHER FACT: Man, things can really change quickly.
1988 Leaf Joe Carter - One of my favorite things in the world is seeing a logo look at itself on an '80s baseball card.
1987 Fleer Mike Lacoss - See, more '87s. We're not done yet...
1989 Donruss Mike Greenwell - If I could hop in a time machine and go back to the late '80s I bet I could sell the cards in this back for at least 20 bucks. I'd get some funny looks when I showed them the Showcase, but it would be worth it.

1996 Collector's Choice Kirk Rueter - I bet you don't know how to pronounce his last name. Quick- say it three times fast.
1986 Topps Lance McCullers - Lance McCullers is a MAN'S name.
1994 Pacific Kevin Brown - Two Kevin Brown cards in this pack from oddball sets 10 years apart. Weird.
1987 Donruss Brian Holton - This card is about an eighth of an inch taller than normal, and coincidentally enough it beat at about an eighth of an inch from the top.
1992 Fleer Ultra Todd Marinovich - I have no idea what this card is doing in here.
1992 Topps Mike Flanagan - Mike has the full stats from 1975-1991 on the back.
1987 Donruss Tito Landrum - Final '87 count: 6 with one Fan Favorites card in an '87 style. Tito smiles at the '87 domination.
1993 Fleer Ultra Chico Walker - Tito and Chico back to back!
1990 Fleer The Starter & Stopper - Those two guys behind Jeff and Mark are creeping me out.

1990 Fleer League S Best Shortstops - Even though this combo card with Cal Ripken Jr is the 39th card in a 35 card pack and is probably the best of the bunch, this card is actually a tragedy. You see, the card slipped to the side of the pack and got glued to the cardboard backing. If I try to remove it a big chunk is going to come off the front of the card. That's not all though -

This is a scarce Canadian version of the card which makes it 10 times as valuable as a normal Fleer card. Of course that makes it worth about 50 cents, but still. Anyone know how to unstick Ripken cards from the cardboard backing of a junk repack?

2008 Upper Deck Legends Masterpieces Hockey

Apparently it's Thanksgiving in Canada (no, really!), so here's a Canadian thing I'm thankful for: Old Hockey Cards. I don't have an old hockey pack to open though so here's a pack of 2008 Legends Masterpieces. Apparently Upper Deck couldn't decide whether to do a legends set or a masterpieces set so the squooshed them together. It's like the Reese's peanut butter cup of Hockey cards. I recently bought a handful of packs, here's the best of the bunch.

21 Patrick Roy

Sweet looking card of St. Patrick. The backs of these cars look good too with a reddish wood grain sorta thing going on. A really cool thing that Upper deck did with these cards is they list the artist they commissioned for the painting on the back. Roy was done by Gardner. It would have been cooler had they listed the artist's first name too.

80 Mr. Hockey

Did someone trademark Gordie Howe's name so he couldn't use it any more? His Goudey card says Mr. Hockey too. He should be Mr. Pucky 'cause he sure does have a lot of them. The atrist here is R. Adair. At least I got an initial on this one.

Hockey Artifacts Advertisment

Don't be fooled by this card, it's an ad not an auto. Evgeni Malkin apparenty signes using his left foot. I got two of these in my 6 packs, why couldn't they put a few different players on each ad? Companies used to do that sort of thing back in the early 2000s before half a dozen manufacturers went kaputt.

CC-BN2 Bernie Nicholls Canvas Clippings

Yeah, a jersey! The blue swatch confused me a bit until I checked the back. This is from an Oilers jersey, not a Kings jersey. I'm cool with that, they were nice enough to tell me at least. Here's something else nifty I recently discovered. If you look up a player's stats on HockeyDB.com, you can click on a page that shows a list of their cards. That's pretty cool if you're a hockey collector!

49 Brian Leetch

The Ranger star is apprehensively holding a very dangerous looking trophy. That silver Leaf looks razor sharp. Be careful Brian! This one was painted by Ron Stark. The way things are going, I'll get the artist's middle name or social security number on the next card!

9 Richard Brodeur

Did you know there's another goalie named Brodeur? Well there is, and Richard's sweater is MUCH cooler than Martin's. This one was painted by Cash. Which Cash? Johnny Cash? Chinese cash? Cash Cab? How the heck am I supposed to Google this, Uppper Deck? If anyone knows who these artists are, please let me know in the comments.

Good stuff, this. I might try for a set if I don't go broke from Baseball Masterpieces.

Legends 35 Football Cards for $1.99

The plan was to have a pack fight for today to commemorate the Patriots' run at an undefeated season, but I forgot the game was on Saturday night. Oops. I'll save the fight for the Super Bowl or something, here's one of those 2 buck Legends repack blisters instead. I've opened a couple of of the Baseball version and both were really fun. What the heck, let's try a football one. Worst case scenario is that it sucks and I missed out on getting a pack of Fleer Ultra instead. Both at the store had a Duce Staley card on the front, I picked the one with a squashed blister allowing a card of UGA alum Reggie Brown to peek out from behind.

Legends 35 Baseball Cards for $1.99

Here's the state of the Hobby in my world: Allen & Ginter, Goudey and Topps Basketball are awesome, but I've almost completed my sets. UD Masterpiece kicks ass but it's sold out the only place I've found it. Bowman Heritage rocks, but isn't out in retail yet. Turkey Red and the Upper Deck Rookies set with no rookies just don't interest me. I'm kind of done with all the Topps, Fleer and Upper Deck base sets out there. I'd buy Topps Series Three, but I still haven't seen pack one of the stuff in retail and the set kind of sucks to be honest. So am I really desperate enough to rip something open that I will bust old hockey packs and a crappy Legends repack blister? You bet I am.

This pack has 35 cards that are quite obviously late 80's and early 90's vintage. I like Roy Oswalt so I got the pack with his ESPN card on the top. Who knows? there might be some cards I need in here for The 792. Let's pry this puppy open.

2005 ESPN Roy Oswalt #41
1992 Fleer Brad Arnsberg #298
1993 Stadium Club Junior Felix #457
1989 Upper Deck Mike LaValliere #417
1993 Stadium Club Mike Fetters #633
1989 Upper Deck Ozzie Guillen #175
1986 Topps Bob Horner #220
1991 O-Pee-Chee Premier Mark Whiten #127
1993 Pinnacle Rickey Henderson #29
1987 Donruss BJ Surhoff rated rookie #28
1995 Score Thomas Howard #391
1985 Topps Gary Redus #146
1993 Stadium Club Ivan Rodriguez #524
1985 Topps Dave Palmer #526
1989 Donruss Ron Kittle #428
1990 Bowman Todd Hundley #142
1989 Upper Deck Jose Canseco checklist #670
1984 Topps Dale Berra #18
1987 Donruss Greg Mathews #208
1994 Topps Bud Black #89
1987 Donruss Bruce Hurst #174
1990 Donruss Dave Johnson #702
1991 Upper Deck Eric Plunk #695
1985 Fleer Burt Hooton #373
1991 Upper Deck Fred McGriff #565
1992 Pinnacle Ken Caminiti #43
1989 Upper Deck Jeff Musselman #41
1992 Topps Joe Girardi #529
1990 Donruss Fred McGriff #188
1989 Donruss Walt Weiss #446
1992 Stadium Club Matt Sinatro #872
1991 Score Steve Howard #364
1988 Topps Paul Assenmacher #266
1994 Classic Rodney Pedraza #53
1994 Collector's Choice Tony Phillips #230

This might be the best two bucks I've spent all year. Yeah, I've pulled some crazy stuff out of packs this year, but I was pretty darn excited to pull an '86 Bob Horner card out of this pack! James Robert was my favorite player when I was a kid, at least my favorite position player that is. Phil Niekro was (and still pretty much is) my absolute favorite player, but the Braves thought he was too old and dumped him and he ended up winning his 300th game in a Yankees uniform. Bob picked up the banner and was my favorite player until collusion sent him packing to Japan. Then it was sort of Murphy by default, Dave Justice took over for him in '90 and finally Chipper Jones became my favorite when Dave ripped the fans a new one before game 6 of the '95 World Series. I mean, yeah, Dave was absolutely right, but couldn't he have held his tongue one more day? I played the same position as Bob and even had his uniform number in little league. If it weren't for those lousy knees, Bob would have been an all-timer. He could crush the hell out of the ball.

This pack is just stuffed with goodness. There's a bunch of Braves in here although just a couple in a Braves uni. We have Paul Assenmacher, Horner, TWO Fred McGriffs, BJ Surhoff (his rookie card!), Ozzie Guillen, Ken Caminiti, Mark Whiten (yep, he was a Brave, look it up), Walt Weiss and Matt Sinatro. Matt's Stadium Club card is interesting in that it shows his Topps rookie card is from 1990 Topps traded. I know I have Donruss cards of him from the early 80's, and Topps didn't make a card of him till 1990? Weird. There's also a bunch of stars in here that I didn't expect to see. There's an early card of Pudge Rodriguez, the Oswalt, a Todd Hundley Bowman Rookie, a checklist card of Jose Canseco, Ron Kittle who is a star in my book no matter what anyone else says, I'll say it again, TWO freaking cards of the Crime Dog and a fantastic Pinnacle card of the one and only Rickey Henderson. Yeah, fine. So it's all crap. There probably isn't a card in the bunch that books for much over a quarter. Who cares about the book. I've had a lot more fun opening this than I have a whole lot of other more expensive stuff this year. Forget the stupid repacks with the lousy jersey card or a guaranteed book value, go for the cheap stuff and have some fun with it.
