1991 Studio

Here's the second pack from the best repack box ever [/heavy sarcasm].

Ozzie Smith - C'mon, Oz, don't be shy. Show us those pearly whites. And that better be your index finger.
Jeff Reardon - Beard!
Bret Saberhagen - Looks a little skeezy here.
Harold Reynolds - Before he was the best studio analyst in the biz.
Frank Thomas - Dig the fade, man.
Kirby Puckett - The bat to head studio thing is a bit overdone in this set, I fear.
Gary Scott - Uh, who? First guy in the pack I couldn't tell you a thing about. Here's the back.
Looks like he had the same taste in TV as my mom.
Kevin McReynolds - So dreamy.
Matt Williams - See what I mean about the bat thing?
Mike Scott - Looking like Andre the Giant. Just a bit? Maybe? Ok, fine.
Rod Carew Puzzle Piece - Probably the most boring piece I could get.

A typical Studio experience. Even with three HOFers (I'm counting the Big Hurt) and five members of the Hall of Very Good in a ten-card pack, it's still just kind of boring. The Ozzie is the only memorable card. If anyone wants any of these, give me a shout.

Those of you who haven't submitted your guesses for the contest, there's still time. Midnight tonight is the cutoff.

1991 Studio

I'll keep it brief and bulleted today:
  • Repack blister pack.
  • Got momentarily excited when I saw this wrapper before purchasing.
  • Thought it was going to be a Stadium Club pack.
  • Was disappointed.
  • Thought '91 Studio wasn't really THAT bad if it was the set I was thinking it was.
  • Opened it up and found this...
116 - Randy Johnson (Hobbies & Interests include watching David Letterman. Facts on the back are in lieu of stats on the back and are reprinted in bold print without permission of Leaf, Inc.)

246 - Atlee Hammaker (Favorite TV show is Andy Griffith. This guy looks like a shop teacher.)
186 - Jose Offerman (Heroes: Alfredo Griffin and Tony Fernandez. Did Offerman ever play for the Jays?)

130 - Bobby Witt (Favorite TV show is The Three Stooges... is a fan of all the Boston teams. Hooray Boston Teams! This is the face he makes when he watches The Boston Teams.)
70 - Kurt Stillwell (Collects fishing lures. Can't make this stuff up. Well, I probably could, but if you dare challenge me I will find out where you live and mail you this card.)
10 - David Segui (His hero is Frank Howard. His Hobbies & Interests were boring.)

79 - Greg Vaughn (Greg enjoys collecting pogs. I may or may not have fabricated this one a bit.)

19 - Jeff Reardon (Watches Miami Vice on TV. Still.)

228 - Don Slaught (Watches L.A. Law and The Rockford Files. Still.)
168 - Hal Morris (Favorite TV show is Masterpiece Theatre. Hal has totally moved on to Antiques Roadshow now.)
22-23-24 - Rod Carew Puzzle Pieces

This is definitely not the set I was thinking of. I was thinking of the slightly less nauseating but still crummy '92 set.

1992 Leaf Studio Baseball

A couple of weeks ago there was some Studio opened here. While there won't be any real-life pirates with parrots on their shoulders in this pack, it's still worth opening.

Let's tear in.

Top to Bottom:
106 Fred McGriff (Notice how high the Crime Dog is wearing his hat. This trend continues throughout the pack. The photographer must have used the phrase "Lemme see those beautiful brown eyes" quite a few times on his shoots. High hats all around. Fred's favorite movie is Police Academy. Wonder if he annoyed his teammates with mouth sound effects in emulation of his favorite character.)

237 Kevin Mitchell (Chokin' up like a mug!)

116 Mike Jackson (Mike Jackson. High hat. Shamon'.)

247 Jeff Russell (High hat.)

16 Chuck McElroy lost his glasses. Boy, is his mom gonna be mad!)

101 Andy Benes (No hat. Not related to Elaine Benes.)

231 Jay Buhner (High hat.)

111 Kevin Bass (High hair. Sexy mustache. Back says "Would like to meet Benny Hinn." I would like to know who Benny Hinn is. Alright then.)

147 Von Hayes (Would like to meet Jacques Cousteau. I guess I would accept Von Hayes and perhaps Randy Ready into Team Zissou. Von sits alone in 445th place on the all-time home runs list with 143. That's two more than Bo Jackson.)

17 Mike Morgan. (His wife's name is Kassie. The spelling of that is the opposite of classy.)

157 Steve Sax. (Sax on the Sox. The person Steve would most like to meet is Abraham Lincoln. Don't hold your breath, Steve.)

27 Bip Roberts (Aaaaaaagggghhhhhh!!! I've been Bipped.)

Grade: A
Bad pack...great set! I love it when card companies do their homework. How else would I have learned that Andy Benes had a man-crush on Dan Marino in 1992? I think a binder full of these would make great bathroom reading material.

1991 Leaf Studio

Today, we pop open a pack of 1991 Leaf Studio. I have always liked the Studio series because I liked the 'professional' poses and the wacky info they collected about the players. After opening this pack, I use the term 'professional' very, VERY loosely....

Mike Scott (Astros) - He collects golf clubs, watches Rocky & Bullwinkle, and his hero is Dennis Liborio (The Astros equipment manager...).
Benito Santiago (Padres) - "Let's be sure to get that earring in there, and, oh, could you snuggle up to this long, thick bat for us, too?" He likes Cars, salsa music, Arsenio Hall, Roberto Clemente and Johnny Bench.
Mike Scioscia (Dodgers) - "Give us that intent look, and we'll take the picture just as you are slapping your glove to get that bit of motion blur we've been looking for in the Studio series..." He likes to play the guitar, listen to Motown, watch "All in the Family," and his heroes are Johnny Bench and Thurman Munson (not to be confused with Herman Munster!).

Greg Swindell (Indians) - "Okay, Greg, we have this bottle of mousse..." Does he have the "Good Lord, just shoot me" look on his face, or what? He likes golf, country-western music, watches more TV than most players judging by the list of shows he watches, and he collects...boots. They ran out of room on the card for a hero list.
Dave Righetti (Giants) - "Dave! Wake up! Did you forget you had pictures today!? Get down here, NOW!" He likes golf and drafting. What is drafting? Is that a beer thing? He watches Knots Landing... Do these folks actually THINK before they answer the questions? His hero is his Dad, Leo.
Marquis Grissom (Expos) - There you go, the traditional professional pose. No jewelry, no props. He likes to fish and draw, likes R&B, watches Cosby, and his hero is Andre Dawson.

Dave Stieb (Blue Jays) - "Show us your ball, and look mad about it." He hunts, fishes, plays guitar, likes rock and blues, has an 'extensive guitar collection,' and his hero is Reggie Jackson.
Howard Johnson (Mets) - "Could you cover a third of your face with the bat, please? Thanks." He collects fish, likes deep-sea fishing, and watches "Gilligan's Island reruns." His hero is Jesus (fisher of men). To say he's got fishing in his blood would be an understatement.
Kelly Mann (Braves) - "Hey! Could you do your best (worst) Vanilla Ice impersonation?? Thanks!" Really? Gel, the fade, even the look... What a sad, sad day... He likes biking and working out, like progressive and classic rock, collect clothes and shoes (HUH?). His heroes are Bob Boone, Steve Yeager, and Carlton Fisk.

Steve Lake (Phillies) - The bird is his. Seriously. "Ruffles." At first, I thought the bird was Leaf's idea, but after reading the back of the card, it's easy to see that Lake wanted the bird in there.... He raises birds, likes restoring cars, watches EPSN, and his hero is Joe Montana.
Diamond King Piece (Rod Carew) - Numbers 10, 11, and 12 of the Rod Carew puzzle. They look like a pencil sketch.
And, finally, the pack itself. Black-N-Gold. Pittsburgh's colors. Can't go wrong with that. :-)

The 50-Cent Cheapo Pack Break: 1996 Studio

This is the final installment of the initial wave of 50-Cent Cheapo Pack Break videos. The results of this ongoing experiment in video gonzo baseball card journalism are, and I must admit, mixed. Not a failed experiment, not yet.... More packs must be acquired. But which ones? Did they like the late-80s/early-90s Topps cellos? Or was it the mid-90s semi-premium wax?

More packs must be busted, and more videos must be made. But when? And from where?
How would Jefferson Burdick handle the situation?

But most important of all is some advice my attorney recently e-mailed to me.

"As your attorney, I advise you to wear the royal blue `Rated Rookie' t-shirt from now on. Your fans seem to think that it has mysterious, God-like powers."

My attorney is very wise. He's not just some dingbat I found on the strip. He's a foreigner. I think he's probably Samoan.

Ahh, yes. The video.... 1996 Studio.... Fine product, fine product. A marked improvement over the disastrous 1995 set. '96 Studio was the first "Donruss" product released by Pinnacle Brands after they bought 'em out. (Some good that did them, huh?) I believe I already have the whole base set stashed away somewhere -- probably in my parent's basement -- so I'm just looking for inserts. Hopefully a Stained Glass Star.
