Topps Heritage High Numbers is out, here's the first pack I opened. As you can see, I got lucky.
Yes, the wrapper actually does say 2008 Topps Baseball Updates & Highlights Presents 2008 Topps Heritage High Numbers Series and it does look pretentious as hell.
The gum is serial numbered now too. At least the wrapper is still an aphrodisiac.
Heritage:
646 Marco Scutaro
533 Johnny Gomes
622 John Baker
713 Seth McClung
HCC JD Jermaine Dye Clubhouse Collection jersey
Topps Updates & Highlights:
UH195 Chris Carter RC
UH300 CC Sabathia
What can I say? Jermaine Dye Jersey with stripe right off the bat. Not too shabby. The rest of the pack is a bit meh, but it's Heritage so who cares. After opening a few packs I am beginning to think that Topps put the Updates & Highlights cards in so there would be at least a fighting chance at pulling a star card out of any given pack. Well, that and forcing us to buy 25% more packs that is. There's a whole lot of rookies and bench players in the high numbers from what I've seen so far. Of course the original '59 set had some rookie pitcher from the Cardinals in it, some guy named Gibson. So, maybe rookies and scrubs ain't that bad. It's Heritage, so I don't have much of a choice now do I?

I hate the idea of the two U&H cards in each pack. Having already bought a box, it would feel like a waste of money to buy this. Plus, the Heritage HI seems to have a traded-esque checklist. I'm not going for any of this.
I loathe idea of the U&H cards taking up space in the Heritage packs. I'll have to look at the checklist and see if I want to bother with these.
(I *like* obscure rookies and bench players, but not if they're the same ones that are in the U&H set.)
A JD relic right off the bat? Bastard!
I like the set, but hate that two card spots are wasted with cards that have their own release.
I will buy these cards, but I won't like it. I'm also done buying U&H after buying about $20 worth of packs.
Why do I feel like Charlie Brown and I'm looking at you like you're Lucy, holding my coveted Joe Shlabotnik?
(I could probably buy an entire hobby box of this stuff and not pull that McClung. I KNOW my luck.)
The two U&H cards are like spyware apps that you get when you download something cool. If we wanted U&H, we'd buy it. Hope this crossing sets in packs isn't the trend with Topps now.
Umm, why do I have the feeling we are going to start seeing serially numbered gum on eBay in the very near future... Of course, the scary part is that there is no print run on them... As Kevin Meaney would say, "That's Not Right!"
